Weligama offers the perfect base for exploring the historical jewels of the south coast, and none shines brighter than the magnificent Galle Fort. Just a short hop along the coast, this UNESCO World Heritage Site is an immaculate blend of European architecture and South Asian atmosphere. A day trip to the Fort is essential, and doing it yourself is the most rewarding way to experience its colonial charm.
The Transport Triumvirate: Getting There
Traveling the thirty kilometers from Weligama to Galle is easy and inexpensive, with three excellent options depending on your budget and desire for speed.
The local bus is the most frequent and budget friendly choice. Route 350, running along the coast, stops right outside the main gates of Galle. The journey takes around thirty to forty minutes, is incredibly cheap, and offers a fun, if sometimes crowded, local experience.
For the most scenic and charming option, take the train from Weligama station. It is almost as fast as the bus and provides beautiful coastal views for a minimal price. Be aware that services are less frequent, so check the schedule for morning departures.
Finally, a tuk tuk or taxi offers door to door convenience, taking just over thirty minutes. While significantly more expensive, it provides air conditioned comfort and flexibility, perfect for travelers wanting a swift, fuss free return late in the evening.

Morning Agenda: History and The Walls (9:00 AM – 1:00 PM)
Upon arriving at Galle’s station, the Fort walls are immediately visible across the road. Start your day with a comprehensive walk along the massive stone ramparts. Beginning near the Clock Tower and working clockwise towards the ocean, you can trace the history of this fortress built first by the Portuguese and extensively fortified by the Dutch.
The wall walk is free, offers continuous ocean views, and is the best way to orient yourself. You will pass key bastions, including the Star Bastion and the Moon Bastion, before reaching the iconic Point De Galle Lighthouse. The lighthouse, standing bright white against the palm trees and the azure sea, is one of the most photographed spots in the country. Afterwards, wander the streets to visit the Dutch Reformed Church (Groote Kerk) and the Galle National Museum to dive deeper into colonial history.

Afternoon Agenda:Culture and Commerce(1:00 PM –5:00 PM)
The afternoon is best spent soaking up the atmosphere of the Fort's interior streets. These narrow, cobblestone lanes are lined with beautifully preserved colonial buildings, now housing boutique shops, art galleries, and charming cafes.
Stop for lunch at the Old Dutch Hospital, which has been cleverly converted into a high end dining and shopping precinct. This location offers great food choices and a wonderful breezy spot to relax before heading out to shop. Explore Pedlar Street and Leyn Baan Street, where you can find everything from exquisite Ceylon tea and ethically sourced gems to unique Sri Lankan handicrafts and contemporary art. It is a slow, relaxed kind of exploration, where every colonial doorway and shuttered window holds architectural delight.

The Golden Hour: Sunset and Return (5:00 PM – 7:00 PM)
The culmination of any Galle Fort day trip is the sunset experience. As evening approaches, join locals and travelers alike on the western ramparts to watch the sky ignite. The best viewing spot is Flag Rock Bastion, where sunset onlookers gather to capture the stunning display as the sun dips below the Indian Ocean horizon. You might even spot the famous local cliff jumpers if you are lucky.
Once the sun has set, grab a final coffee or snack before making your way back to the main gate. The bus station and train station are located right outside, making your return journey to Weligama simple and straightforward. Aim to catch one of the last services to ensure a stress free trip back to your accommodation.
